REI KAWAKUBO/COMMES
DES GARÇONS: ART OF
THE IN-BETWEEN
Type: Editorial, Exhibition, Visual Identity

Rei Kawakubo is a masterful avant-garde fashion designer known for upending traditional notions of fashion. This reimagining of the 2017 Met exhibition explores the “in-between” of various dichotomous ideas through various fashion pieces designed by Kawakubo.

Through my redesign I aimed to bring that dichotomy to the forefront and celebrate the essence of Kawakubo’s intriguing pieces and the questions they ask.

I was really drawn to was Kawakubo’s focus on juxtaposition and how she uses fashion to explore the space between dichotomies.

I took this project as an opportunity to dive into my own interpretation of Rei Kawakubo’s work and really explore, not just aesthetically what her work looked like, but what her values were as a designer and how I could translate those ideas through print.
So when designing I wanted all design elements to represent the way her work lives in the in-between, from the color (white and black) to the image curation (professional images versus sketches).

The project culminated to a reimagining of the promotional material surrounding the exhibition. Taking cues from the newly established visual identity, focuses on juxtapositions through both imagery and typography.
